The original build was used as a blast freezing facility. The existing concrete floor and sub-base were made up of chalk. Over numerous years the blast freezer penetrated the concrete floor foundation and sub-base. This caused substantial ground heave, which not only lifted and cracked the foundation but also pushed the insulated wall panels apart.
TCH Construction excavated the reinforced concrete foundation in confined conditions. The subsequent excavated material was then recycled and used as a sub-base for the farm roads.
Post excavation, we were unable to proceed further. After performing test excavations, we found impacted ice to a depth of over 1m deep.
The contract was placed on hold until the ground conditions had thawed sufficiently to enable the sub-base to be excavated and relayed with a granite sub-base to prevent the possibility of future ground heave once the freezers had been replaced.
